June, 20th | July, 13th - Willi Maus
Tabriz, June, 20th Poultry bazar:
Poultry, alive or already plucked, from chick to fully grown turkey you can find here. Some of the animals run free in the shop between the much too small cages of their likes.
Above the chick enclosure beside the door a bird cage is hanging, in there rabbits are sitting, nearly on top of each other, so narrow the room is measured.
At this sight the heart of each animal friend is aching and the first thought is: “Immediately taking all of them with us, including the sad half grown geese, stored in a cardboard box.” But we cannot buy free the whole poultry meat market and so only Willi Maus may accompany us to our home, the trailer.
Atreju is exited about the black and white baby rabbit, he chose Willi and gave him his name.
For the first time in his life Willi is hopping free on the lawn of the El Goli Park, he finds Happy and her sheltering fur. At once the small rabbit starts looking for milk. Happy is patient with the new member of our household and gives him a fur care.
Willi, the trailer rabbit, travels in his closed bird cage while driving, against boredom he lets himself be spoiled with carots, salad or clover, other vegetable waste he only eats in times of need. All of our breaks Willi spends outside his cage, sometimes only inside the trailer, but when there is the possibility, he is hopping around outside and takes a nap sheltered in the cove, that the big profile of the tractors tyre is offering him.
At first we have to slow down Atreju in his play with Willi. “A baby needs quietness and sleep, only smooth caressing.”
But Willi grows fast and makes his first real hop onto Atrejus bed, and he allowes himself being put in cars, bowls and the sandbucket and being carried around. Not at all that Willi dislikes this treating, he stays laying still at Atrejus side and waits for his next idea.
One thought clouds our pleasure in the new trailer member, and is not the thought of rabbit droppings or bite marks, but that we have to find a home for Willi, one where he can run free and is cuddled. Im moments when Willi is lying specially relaxed, his hindlegs spread, we think of taking him with us to Austria as hand luggage.
After Willi has accompanied us from Tabriz – Kalaiba – Abesh Amed
– Tabriz – Bostanabad – Khalkhal
– Hashtpar – Fuman nach Masouleh, Willi discovers his liking of sweets and starts to test the human food.
Willi has disappeared, I find out, soon after Ewald with Atreju has left for the village, and I start to look for him. I take the bed apart, hoping that Willi had hidden underneath, because he merrily is hopping in and out the trailers door. I climb some steep slopes, only because on top a plastic is moving in the wind and from beneath, for me in my hope, it looks as if Willi is sitting there. I have already given up the search, when my family comes back. Sad news - sad mood.
Atreju is sure, that Willi will show up again. Ewald thinks, that visitors have taken him with them and now treat him well. I hope, that he is somewere outside underneath the width of the mountain herbs, well hidden from the enemies of a rabbit.
Masouleh July, 15th:
We are told that a small black and white rabbit had been seen the evening before by a family having a picnic in our neighbourhood.
I call a silent “goodbye and keep your ears stiff” into the landscape.
But in unwatched moments I shout aloud “Willi, Willi”, hoping that I will see the little one once more, to say goodbye, to know that he is well.
