April, 2nd – 5th 2005 | the big crossing
The first common drive from Portonovo to Ancona to the port.
Ewald is appropriately nervous, the road is leading downhill steeply.
Atreju, Happy and I are in the trailer and enjoy the journey. It´s funny to look through the front window out to the tractor.
The people along the route smile and wave to us, some meters we are escorted by some bikes.
Ewald manages the narrow bends in Ancona without problems. Happy, but much to early
we reach the docks. The ferry doesn’t take off before half past ten in the evening.
So we spend a long day in the area. Many of the fellow passengers marvel at Fergy and take photos, want to know more about us and our project. Here we get to know also the first Afghans.
Those men are bringing busses from Germany to Afghanistan. Straightaway they invite us
to their families in Herat, give us their adress.
At last here we go, Happy gets stowed away in a kennel on board. Contrary to all expectations she enters the cage without resistance, glad to have found a quiet place.
About our savekeeping I´m not so enthusiastic. The cabin resembles to a prison cell.
Beside the bunk bed hardly one meter of space, no window, but therefore a washbasin and a huge column in the small room.
The lady at the reception gives us the cabin next to it, there we have thirty centimetres more, room for the luggage and Atreju can sleep on the fur on the floor. This way it´s okay and I recover from the shock of accommodation.
Soon nearly all the passengers and the crew know about our project. So we chat and discuss about the choice of our route for the next two days, Atreju soon is finding playmates and has a lot of fun.
The satellite navigation of two german bikers shows, that our ship is moving nearly in “Fergyspeed”.
28 km/h on average.
